UTPA freshman Melissa Uriegas (Edinburg, TX/PSJA North H.S.) was one of nine student-athletes awarded with the State Farm Insurance/PGA Minority College Golf Scholarships at the Opening Ceremony of the 20th-Annual National Minority Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL, on Thursday (May 4).
A biology and chemistry major, Uriegas finished with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and received the highest scholarship awarded of $2,000 at the PGA Historical Center. The UTPA rookie was a Dean's List First Honors selection en route to earning her first trip to the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club.
"To me, this is a true testament of her work habits," said head women's golf coach Barb Odale. "Melissa is a model student-athlete, and this scholarship shows her fortitude in being both a pre-med major and collegiate golfer."
"State Farm Insurance is proud to be a part of this Championship, and this year, the nine scholarship recipients are extremely deserving as they are committed to their academics," said in a prepared statement by Bobby Wilkinson, Manager of National Sponsorship Marketing for State Farm Insurance Companies.
The PGA National Minority College Golf Championships will be conducted on May 5-7 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL - the PGA of America's first-owned and operated state-of-the-art public golf facility.
State Farm Insurance and The Golf Channel have combined to produce a one-hour PGA National Minority College Golf Championship highlight program, which will air on July 6th at 6:00 p.m. eastern time.
