The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's golf programs were represented by five student-athletes who were recognized with 2005 NCAA Division I All-Independent honors announced on Wednesday (May 11).
Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.) was the lone Lady Bronc representative selected to the All-Independent first team. The UTPA junior captured her third consecutive National Minority College Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL, this season while capturing the UTPA Bronc Classic title and runner-up honors at the CenturyTel Texas State Invitational. Her scoring average of 77.6 ranked her third among all NCAA Division I Independent golfers.
Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portugal) and Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham H.S.) were each honored with second team All-Independent honors. Cortes notched six top-15 finishes this past season and recorded a 79.6 scoring average. Frazier, who finished fourth at the National Minority College Golf Championships, collected a pair of top-five finishes.
The Lady Broncs also won their third consecutive National Minority College Golf Championship team title, finishing with a total team score of 912 (306-307-299). UTPA was able to distance itself from runner-up Bethune-Cookman, who finished 37 strokes behind the defending champions at 987.
On the men's side, A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) and Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) were each named honorable mention All-Independent selections following the conclusion of the 2005 spring season.
Hohn was the Broncs' top golfer with a 76.0 scoring average while Tudi was second on the squad with a 77.6 scoring average. The UTPA freshmen were both tied for 18th overall at the 2005 National Minority College Golf Championships where the Broncs finished fifth overall.
There were 15 total NCAA Division I Independent men's teams while nine institutions competed as Independents on the women's side.
