Three members of The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's golf teams were selected to the 2005-06 Academic All-Independent Team, which was released on Wednesday (June 7).
Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis H.S.) finished with the second highest grade point average among all NCAA Division I Independent golfers with a 3.929 GPA in communications. The Conroe, TX, native built up quite a resume during her four-year collegiate career with the Lady Broncs, both on and off the golf course. Boychuk recorded nine top-10 finishes and five top-five showings, including a pair of runner-up laurels at the National Minority College Golf Championships. A three-time NGCA Scholar-Athlete award winner, Boychuk earned All-Independent Second Team honors for the second time in her career.
Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.) earned her first trip to the Academic All-Independent Team after recording a 3.842 grade point average in industrial engineering. The Lady Broncs' golfer graduated from UTPA in May of 2006 as the program's most successful golfer as she posted five tournament victories, including a trio of National Minority College Golf Championships. A four-time All-Independent selection and three-time NGCA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, Maynard was selected as the 2005-06 UTPA Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) was the lone UTPA men's golfer represented on the 2005-06 Academic All-Independent squad as he recorded a 3.349 grade point average in psychology. The President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Norris competed in five tournaments during the spring season, posting a 78.9 strokes average in 14 rounds. The UTPA senior was selected as a Bronc Pride 3.0 Club award winner in both semesters as well as earning a spot on the UTPA Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
The 2005-06 NCAA Division I Independent Academic All-Independent Golf Teams were selected by Sports Information Directors at member institutions. Nominations from each school were accepted for student-athletes who had at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, had reached a sophomore athletic standing and participated in 50 percent of the team's matches during the 2005-06 season.
