The National Golf Coaches Association announced the recipients of the 2008-09 NGCA All-American Scholar Team with three members from the Lady Broncs golf team earning the honor.
For the first time in their collegiate career, Haley Hocott, Mariale Camey and MJ Camey earned NGCA All-American Scholar Team honors.
Three-year veteran Marial Camey concluded the 2008-09 academic campaign with a 3.6 grade point average, while majoring in Business Administration/Management. Camey marked a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester.
Sophomore Haley Hocott earned the honors after finishing the year with a 3.7 GPA in Criminal Justice. This honor comes after being crowned Great West Conference Champion and taking the runner-up spot at the National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.
MJ Camey earns the honors after concluding her first academic campaign at UTPA with a 3.7 GPA in Political Science. Camey also receives this honor after capturing the 2009 National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship title in Port St. Lucie, FL.
"All three girls worked hard on and off the golf course this year and I am proud of what they have done for UTPA Women's Golf. Their hard work in the classroom proves that they just don't play golf; it's about so much more!" said Director of Men and Women's Golf Ofelia Lopez.
The criteria for selection to the All-American scholar team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade point average is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
