The National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Teams for Division I, II & III announced today that The University of Texas Pan American women's golf program was recognized as one of twenty-five golf programs with the highest collective team average GPA.
As a team the Lady Broncs posted a cumulative 3.528 grade point average and were tied for twenty-fifth with Kent State University.
Teammates Elizabeth Rodriguez (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S) and Rebecca De Leon (Mission, TX/Veterans Memorial H.S.) were two of 368 women's collegiate golfers recognized to the 2006-07 NGCA All-American Scholar Team for Division I.
Rodriguez, majoring in pre-medicine posted a 3.7 cumulative grade point average and earned All-Independent second team honors for the second time in her career as the UTPA junior competed in nine tournaments. She posted the best finish of her collegiate career at the National Minority College Golf Championships, where she garnered a third-place finish in her junior campaign.
De Leon, majoring in education was named to the UTPA Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the first time in her career. She garnered Dean's List Second Honors for the second time in her career and was cited as a Bronc Pride 3.0 Club member for the second time in her career. The sophomore recorded her best finish of the spring season at the National Minority College Golf Championships where she posted a seventh-place finish with a three-round tally of 238, including a season-best 76 in the third round of competition.
The criteria for the selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly schedule competitive rounds during the year.
