The University of Texas-Pan American women's golf program released their upcoming 2007-08 schedule on Tuesday (Aug. 21). The Lady Broncs will be led by newly-named head women's golf coach Ofelia Lopez.
"The new schedule is one that is going to show that we're going to be a force to reckon with," said Lopez. "With this being my first year as head coach I think the girls are really excited about this upcoming season. I think the schedule is great, and I think we are going to be able to grow as a team and be able to get into more tournaments in the future."
The Lady Broncs will kick-off the 2007 fall campaign at the UNT Lady Eagle Invitational hosted by the University of North Texas on Sept. 10th-11th followed by the Fred Marx Invitational on Sept. 24-25 hosted by Louisiana Monroe.
UTPA will conclude the fall season playing in two tournaments. The Lady Broncs travel to Tulsa, OK for the ORU Shootout where they will be welcomed by Oral Roberts University on Oct. 1st-2nd. The end of the fall season occurs on Nov. 5th-6th in Gulf Shores, AL at the UAB Fall Beach Blast hosted by UAB.
"We end the fall season at the UAB Fall Beach Blast which is an All-Conference USA preview of what it's going to be like in the spring," Lopez said. "I think its going to be a really good tournament. We play against some really good competition like The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the University of Texas El Paso. I think we are going to end the fall season really well."
After a restful break, the Lady Broncs will begin their 2008 spring season in Linder, LA for the Koasati Pines Collegiate on Feb. 9th-10th followed by a trip back to Texas for the Islander Spring Classic in Corpus Christi, TX on Feb. 25-26 hosted by TAMU-CC.
UTPA will head to the East Coast for the Gainesville Shootout III where they will be welcomed by The University of Florida on Mar. 13th- 14th, a member of the Southeastern Conference. The following week, the Lady Broncs will travel to Hot Springs, AR, for the UALR Golf Classic on Mar. 24th-25th.
The month of April has Lopez traveling back to her alma mater, Hattiesburg, MS for the Lady Eagle Invitational hosted by Southern Mississippi on April 7th-8th followed by a trip to Port St. Lucie, FL for the National Minority Championship on May 9th-11th. UTPA posted a second-place showing last season and has captured three of the five tournaments.
