Rob Hubbard begins his fourth season as head men's and women's tennis coach at The University of Texas-Pan American.
After improving the numbers in the record books for both the men and women's tennis programs, Rob Hubbard's third season as head coach couldn't have been any better than if he had written it out himself. From starting his third season with 14 wins, from the previous season, to ending his third season with 24 wins and receiving Coach of the Year accolades was a vast improvement.
Hubbard led both his men and women's tennis teams to multiple awards with two members of his men's tennis team, Marcus Dornauf and Brett Bernstein, receiving Aeropostale Southland Conference Player of the Week honors and Aswin Vijayaragavan and Marcus Dornauf earning All-Southland Conference Second Team laurels. Silke Buksik, Megan Bedeau and Luisa Cantu all received First Team All-Independent Singles and Doubles Team with Julie Cirne-Lima and Stephanie Willerding receiving First Team All-Independent Doubles Team and Second Team All-Independent Singles Team. Buksik also received UTPA Female Athlete of the Year for her outstanding season with a 19-3 record in singles and a 17-7 record in doubles.
With Hubbard's direction, the men's tennis team jumped two spots from the previous season to be ranked 12th in the South Central Region for the fifth time in seven seasons with an overall record of 7-12.
The women's team earned a spot on the 2008 Women's Division I Final Regional Rankings in 15th with teams from Baylor University, University of Texas, TCU, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M, Rice, Texas Tech, SMU, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, University of Houston, Lamar, University of North Texas and Northwestern State University.
Hubbard led his women's team to one of the best season's in program history since the '89-'90 campaign. The women started the season off right by pulling off one of the biggest and most exciting wins in UTPA women's tennis history by handing Air Force a 4-3 upset. The women collected a win against Oral Roberts recording their 10th win of the season, which at the time was the most in UTPA women's tennis history.
On a weekend against Oral Roberts, UT-El Paso and UT-San Antonio, the Lady Broncs went 3-0 on their home court making them undefeated at home. They followed that with a sweep against McNeese recording their fifth straight win of the season.
The women only lost one match at home, against Lamar, making them 7-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The women finished their season 17-8 with a 7-1 home record and a 10-7 record on the road.
Hubbard led his men's tennis team in the right direction with a win to begin his season against College of the Southwest. The men later followed that with their first conference win against Nicholls State with a 5-2 victory and their second conference win against Lamar, 4-3. The men also recorded sweeps against Prairie View A&M and Centenary.
As if having the best season in program's history wasn't enough for Hubbard, the women's tennis team received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award for the 2007-2008 season for their excellence in the classroom. Enrique Montemayor was also a recipient of the ITA Scholar-Athlete award with it being his second time receiving the award. It was the women's third consecutive year receiving the award with Luisa Cantu and Giana Oliveira receiving the award for the second time and making Dean's List - Second Honors as well.
The UTPA head men's and women's tennis coach made an immediate impact on the Broncs and Lady Broncs as they had a successful second season under Hubbard's direction.
In his second season with the Broncs, Hubbard guided the Valley's squad to a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season and helped them double their wins total from the previous season.
A tireless recruiter, Hubbard inserted five newcomers into the UTPA lineup that included talent from the State of Texas, but he also brought an international flare to the rotation as he signed student-athletes from Mexico, Panama, India and Finland.
The Broncs made a dramatic improvement from the previous season even as their schedule grew more and more difficult during the 2007 campaign. The Broncs recorded victories this past season against Big East Conference-foe University of Connecticut and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference-opponent Marist College.
The UTPA men's tennis program never stepped away from a challenge as the Broncs competed against several nationally- and regionally-ranked opponents in Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Middle Tennessee State, BYU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and University of Nebraska.
The UTPA women's tennis program continued to make impressive strides during the 2007 spring season as the Lady Broncs rallied off eight wins, including a five-match winning streak between February and March.
Coming into the 2007 spring season, the Lady Broncs had a lot of trouble against interstate rivals Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Islanders had captured all 12 matches dating back to the 2000 season. However - things changed this past campaign as the Lady Broncs not only defeated the Islanders for the first time in program history, but also recorded a sweep in the season series.
The Lady Broncs also recorded victories against the University of Connecticut, Nicholls State and Central Arkansas and defeated Stephen F. Austin for the first time in program history, which was a span of 10 matches dating back to the 1994 season.
Hubbard took over the reigns of the UTPA men's and women's tennis program in November of 2005 and made the most of the short year with the Broncs and Lady Broncs. The women's tennis team finished with a 7-14 record, which were the most victories that the Lady Broncs had achieved over the course of the last five seasons.
The Lady Broncs recorded a fourth-place finish at the 2006 National Independent Women's Tennis Tournament where they had a pair of players earn all-tournament honors in Silke Buksik and Marine de Bourqueney.
The Broncs struggled in the first season with Hubbard as the head coach where they posted a 3-11 record, but collected victories over Grambling State, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
The biggest success came in the classroom for the Broncs and Lady Broncs as they were one of 22 programs in the nation to have both squads selected as All-Academic Scholar Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. This was the second time in three seasons that the Broncs and Lady Broncs earned the academic distinction.
The Lady Broncs were represented by Elysia Sloan, Buksik and Jessica Nanez on the ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Team while Enrique Montemayor and Rosendo Cantu represented the Broncs on that academic squad.
Hubbard made his return to the Rio Grande Valley after serving as the head men's tennis coach at Goucher College, a NCAA Division III institution, in Baltimore, MD, for the previous five seasons. During his time with the Gophers' program, Hubbard guided the squad to its first NCAA Appearance during the 2005 season where his top two student-athletes were ranked among the top-40 in the nation.
That season, Goucher was ranked in the top-30 in the NCAA Division III polls, and Hubbard was selected as the ITA Atlantic South Region Coach of the Year as well as Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Hubbard guided the Gophers to a 15-4 mark during the 2003-04 season and finished 14th in the Atlantic South Region rankings, which was the first time in program history that the squad was ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the end of the season.
Prior to accepting the head coaching position at Goucher College, Hubbard spent eight years as the Owner and Director of Tournament Tough Training Center in Baltimore, MD, where the program trained elite junior tournament players for national, sectional and state competition.
In the program, players were mentored throughout on-court drilling and match-play as well as off-court weight training, conditioning, nutrition and mental training. In his time with Tournament Tough Training Center, Hubbard produced more than 25 nationally-ranked junior players.
The UTPA head coach served as the Co-Head Coach of the USTA Junior Player Development Area Training Center in Baltimore, MD, from 1992-94 after he spent seven years as the Director of Tennis at The Elkridge Club where he was responsible for developing senior, adult and junior events, programs, clinics and lessons.
Hubbard served as the Head Tennis Professional at the Orchard Indoor Tennis Club from 1989-93 as well as co-owned the Tennis Institute Tennis Camp for six years. He got his start in the coaching profession as the Assistant Tennis Professional at The Wimbledon Racquet Club in Arlington, TX, in 1981.
The former Pan American standout was a two-time USTA National Champion and was selected to represent the United States at the Italia Cup, which was a 35-and-over Davis Cup competition, during his post-professional playing days. He was also the USPTA Maryland Pro of the Year in 2000 and was the USPTA Mid-Atlantic 35-and-over Player of the Year during his elite playing career.
Hubbard was a standout for the Pan American University men's tennis program from 1974-78 where he was the top-ranked player on the nationally-ranked Broncs' squad. In 1978, Hubbard was part of a Broncs' team that achieved the first top-10 ranking in program history where he was invited to the NCAA Division I National Singles' and Doubles' Championships in his final two seasons with the squad.
Following the 1978 season, Hubbard turned professional and enjoyed three seasons on the ATP Tour where he was ranked in the top-300 in the world and competed in a pair of U.S. Open's during the 1979 and 1980 seasons.
Hubbard is a certified coach by the USPTA as well as a member of the Wilson National Advisory Staff and a former member of the Board of Directors of the USTA Player Development Area Training Center. He has earned a USPTA (P-1) Certification.
Hubbard and his wife, Robin, were married in March of 2007 and currently reside in Edinburg.
