The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team opens their spring season on Saturday (Jan. 28) in San Antonio, TX on the campus of the University of Texas-San Antonio as they have a dual-match against the UTEP Miners at 10:00 a.m. and the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday marks the first match under former Bronc standout and now head coach, Robert Hubbard. Hubbard joined the UTPA athletic department in November and is excited about getting the season underway.
"We're ready to get going and to get on the court. This is a good chance for us to see where we stand at this point and I expect us to have a strong showing this weekend," said Hubbard.
UTEP is coming off a season in which they reached the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament and Middle Tennessee State reached the second round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament with an 8-14 record.
During the fall, the Lady Broncs competed in multiple tournaments, including the ITA Regional, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, TX. Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) was the team's top performer during the fall and should play in one of the top flights for the Lady Broncs all season. Newcomer Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) competed in just one tournament, but won both of her singles matches.
