The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's tennis programs both suffered losses as the men fell to 2-3 and the women fell to a 5-3 overall record this past weekend in Little Rock, Arkansas.
On the men's side in singles action, Ivan Avila lost to Borja Zarco in a 7-6, 6-1 upset in the number one spot in the rotation. Tennessee Technological University was to continue their win streak with the second win of the rotation when Tiago Gilioli defeated newcomer Ashwin Vijayaragavan in a 6-0, 6-1 setback.
The Broncs were back in play when Nirvick Mohinta defeated Juan Gomez in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 upset.
The Broncs were to lose the momentum when Dean O'Brien defeated Marcus Dornauf in a 6-2, 6-1 decision. In the number five spot in the rotation, Brett Bernstein was handed the loss against Giovanni Vaglietti in a 6-4, 6-4 upset.
The Broncs were to come back once again when Andrew Irving defeated James Crawford in a 6-2,6-2.
In doubles action, sophomore Brett Bernstein and freshman Ashwin Vijayaragavan were defeated by Juan Gomez and Tiago Gilioli with a score of 8-7.
The Broncs were to have two wins in doubles with the Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving defeating Dean O'Brien and Giovanni Vaglietti in a 8-3 upset. Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf made the second win with the defeat of Borja Zarco and Mario Gutierrez with a score of 8-5.
On the women's side, the women suffered two setbacks as they lost to Tennessee Tech and Arkansas-Little Rock 4-3.
Against Tennesse Tech in singles action, Giana Oliveira suffered a loss against Kelly Holtzhausen with a score of 6-2,6-4, while teammate Julia Cirne-Lima lost to Diana Woodcock with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 upset. Megan Bedeau was to collect the third loss in singles action with the loss to Mireia Cano with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Stephanie Willerding was to pick up the momentum in the fourth spot in the rotation when she defeated Kay Ngiam in a 6-2,6-2 setback. Teammates Silke Buksik and Luisa Cantu each picked up a win with Buksik defeating Katie Barnhill 7-6 (7-1),5-7,1-0 (10-6) and Cantu defeating Evgenia Yartseva 6-4,7-5.
In doubles action, Julia Cirne-Lima and Giana Oliveira were defeated by Mireia Cano and Kelly Holtzhausen 8-5. In the second spot of the rotation, Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau collected the second loss for the Lady Broncs against Kay Ngiam and Diana Woodcock with a score of 8-4. Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu defeat Evgenia and Katie Barnhill in the final spot of the rotation 8-4.
In the second match of the evening against Arkansas-Little Rock, Giana Oliveira was handed the loss against Laetitia Bourgeon 6-4, 6-0. Julia Cirne-Lima picked up the pace with the defeat of Anne Weijenborg 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lady Broncs would lose the momentum with two more losses in singles action. Megan Bedeau lost the third spot in the rotation to Marta Gomez Jordana 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Stephanie Willerding lost her match against Patricia Cortes 6-1, 6-3.
Silke Buksik held the second win in singles action when she defeated Arkansas-Little Rock's Rebecca VanDen Houte 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, while teammate Luisa Cantu held the final win in singles in the sixth spot of the rotation by defeating Nathalia Garay 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima were to have the only win in doubles as they went on to defeat Anne Weijenborg and Marta Gomez Jordana 8-4.
In the second spot of the rotation, Megan Bedeau and Silke Buksik were handed the loss against Laetitia Bourgeon and Rebecca VanDen Houte 8-5. Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu were defeated by Patricia Cortes and Nathalia Garay 8-3.
The men's tennis program will be back in action on Feb. 15 as they face-off against Southland Conference-foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with match time set for 6:00 p.m.
The women's tennis program will be back in action on Feb. 16 and 17 as they play host to Texas State and Monterrey Tech. The match against Texas State is to be held at the Orville Cox Center while the match against Monterrey Tech is to be held at the Cimarron Country Club.
