The Great West Conference office announced this past Friday (Feb. 12) the 2010 preseason poll for women's tennis with UTPA ranked second, voted by the Great West Conference coaches.
"We are pleased to be ranked in second in the preseason poll. The girls are motivated to work harder throughout the season in hopes of competing well at the conference tournament," said head men's and women's tennis coach Chris Taylor.
The UTPA women's tennis program finished three points behind Chicago State (22), who was voted to take the inaugural GWC women's tennis championships. Chicago State received four first-place votes.
Five points behind UTPA, in third, was NJIT with 14 points, followed by North Dakota in a close fourth with 12 points, and lastly South Dakota with eight points.
Last season, Chicago State was the only team to defeat the Lady Broncs at the National Independent Tournament.
The 2010 Great West Conference women's tennis championships will take place on May 1-2 in Grand Forks, ND hosted by The University of North Dakota.
