UTPA BroncBusters - Silke Buksik

Silke Buksik

Silke Buksik

March 17, 2007

1. How do you manage to keep your grades up to par when you travel most of the school year?
SB - I would say time management. It's all about being a true student-athlete because you have to manage your time, and when you study, you actually need to study.

2. What made you choose UTPA?
SB - I wanted to go somewhere in Texas because my brother was playing tennis at UT-Arlington. I thought this place was great because it was close to Mexico, and I would have the best of both worlds in the United States and Mexico.

3. What are your goals for the remainder of the season?
SB - I would say continue to improve in both singles and doubles. I changed my grip on my forehand so I need to continue to work hard to master it. I just want to help the team as much as I can.

4. How has the mindset of the team changed from the beginning of the season to this point?
SB - We have a lot more confidence. I think that the freshmen were a little scared at the beginning because they didn't know what to expect. Now - we have more experience, more talent and have a lot more confidence heading into the remainder of the season.

5. What has been your most memorable moment here at UTPA?
SB - I would say that beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was one of my most memorable moments because for the last two years - I've always wanted to beat them. After we beat them the first time, it was a great feeling.

6. Who has had the greatest impact on you?
SB - My parents... they taught me what to do and what not to do. They brought me into tennis, but most importantly, they made me realize that I need to get my education first. They've been a great impact on my life, and really have supported me.

7. Does the break in between seasons affect your training?
SB - It's hard because you don't have a lot of time. I admit that I didn't come back to school in the best shape because I was trying to spend as much time with my family as I could.

8. Does anybody else in your family play tennis or are you the first to play?
SB - My parents both played tennis, and they got me involved. My brother played tennis at UT-Arlington, and he had some pretty good success there.

9. How's the competition different from Germany?
SB - Everybody is more into tennis here. Back home... you don't have high school teams because they are more club teams, and you only play six matches a year.

10. What would you say is the strongest part of your game?
SB - I would say my backhand... as Coach Hubbard would say - I can tattoo the ball with my backhand.

1. What is the first thing you pack when you hit the road?
SB - Passport

2. Where was the first court you played on (collegiate) other than the Orville Cox Tennis Courts?
SB - Laredo

3. When was the last time you sang karaoke?
SB - I'm too embarrassed to sing karaoke

4. What were your first thoughts when you came to the U.S.?
