In its final game of the season, The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team were led by the trio of Lady Bronc seniors in Giana Oliveira, Julia Cirne-Lima and Silke Buksik where they recorded a hard-fought 4-3 upset victory over Santa Clara University on Monday (Apr. 14).

"I can't tell you how proud I am of this team and their record setting performance this year," said head men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "The individual performances turned in on this remarkable team this season set the stage for the team's banner year."

From beginning to end, the Lady Broncs had their minds set on capturing their final game of the season and finishing with one of the best records in program history. Oliveira and Cirne-Lima led off doubles' action with a dominating 8-2 victory over Stephanie Galainena and Ashley Pane.

Collecting their 19th win of the season and deciding doubles' point was duo Buksik and Megan Bedeau who recorded a 9-8 decision against Myra Davoudi and Meghan Madden in the second flight while Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu suffered an 8-4 setback over Carmen Pham in the third flight.

"The doubles point, which we have had our issues with this season turned out to be huge for us," said Hubbard. "Giana and Julia were at their best for their last match as seniors representing UTPA. It was an incredible come from behind victory for, not only seniors Silke and Megan but obviously the team. They were awesome!"

Heading into singles' play with a 1-0 advantage was huge for the Lady Broncs as they were neck and neck with Santa Clara, but seniors Oliveira and Buksik made sure they would end their careers on a high note.

Oliveira started off with a dominating 6-3, 6-2 victory over Santa Clara's number-one singles' player in Galainena while Cirne-Lima dropped a close 7-6 (10), 6-0 decision to Davoudi playing in the number-two spot.

Bedeau fell in the third flight to Pham by scores of 4-6, 6-4, and 10-8 while Willerding suffered a 6-4, 6-2 setback against Lindsey McBride in the number-four spot in the rotation.

Capturing her 44th victory of the season and setting a new school record was senior captain Buksik, who collected the Lady Broncs third point of the match when she handed Pane a 6-4, 6-2 setback.

Collecting the decisive fourth match point for the Lady Broncs was Cantu, who recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hull in the number-six spot.

While in the West Coast, the Lady Broncs finished with 2-1 record and recorded the program's all-time single season record of 17 wins with eight losses. The 17-8 overall record gives the program their highest winning percentage for a season of .720.
