Women's Tennis to Host National Independent Tournament

The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis program will be hosting the 2009 National Independent Tournament at the Orville Cox Tennis Center this Friday, April 17.

The tournament will be round robin format with a field of five teams including Chicago State, NJIT, Longwood, Seattle and host squad UTPA.

Events will begin on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. with the first match scheduled for Chicago State and NJIT. UTPA and Longwood will follow shortly after the first match. An awards ceremony will be held on the final day of competition after the conclusion of the Seattle and NJIT match.

The Lady Broncs are 2-13 for the season and are led by junior Luisa Cantu. Cantu leads the squad with a 6-8 record in singles with a 5-8 record in No. 2 singles and a 1-0 mark in No. 3 singles. She is currently on a two-win match streak and is 4-6 in her last 10 matches.

The Lady Broncs are scheduled to face Longwood in their first match. The Lancers are 4-9 for the season and are led by Laura Simon. Simon has earned two victories in the No. 1 spot of the rotation and three in the No. 2 spot.

The Lady Broncs will follow-up today's match against Longwood with NJIT.
