The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis concluded day one at the 2007 ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Lubbock, TX on Friday (Oct. 19).
The 2007 ITA Southwest Regional Championships began with the qualifying singles round where the Lady Broncs were led by Giana Oliveira (Santa Anna, Brazil/Eckerd College) who posted a (6-7, 6-4 and 6-2) win over Amber Brightly of University of Texas-El Paso. Oliveira advanced to the second round where she suffered a (6-4, 6-2) setback against Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice University.
Julia Cirne-Lima (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Eckerd College) collected a first round (6-4, 6-2) win over Ximena Fuentes of University of Texas-El Paso advancing to the second round where she was defeated by Monica Neveklovska of SMU (6-2, 4-6, and 6-4).
After a first round bye, senior Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier Gymnasium Waiblingen) fell to Laura Ring of UTSA (6-3, 6-4) while Megan Bedeau (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) dropped her opening match to Ashley Akin of University of North Texas (6-4, 6-7 and 7-6).
Stephanie Willerding (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) suffered a (6-2, 6-3) setback to Sofya Lifanova of Texas-Arlington while fellow teammate Sarah Burton (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Oakville Trafalgar H.S.) fell to Natalie Holmes of Baylor University (6-1,6-2) and Luisa Cantu (Victoria, Tamps, Mexico/Colegio Jose de Escandon) dropped her opening match (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to Alexandria Dyckman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action tomorrow for the start of day two of the qualifying singles, main draw singles, main draw doubles and consolation singles competition starting at 9 a.m.
