SAN MARCOS, TX - The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team came away with several victories on Saturday (Oct. 31), as they competed at the Texas State Play Day hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos.
Saint Edward's University, The University of Texas-San Antonio and the hosting team, Texas State University were set to play along side the Lady Broncs. All players were playing one doubles match and two singles matches.
The women stepped on the courts early in the morning to start with their doubles matches. Luisa Cantu and Megan Bedeau faced Sarah Adams and Caroline Dedering from UTSA and won handedly giving the Roadrunners an 8-3 loss. Reetta Raty and Andrea Salvetova struggled in their doubles match as they fell 8-6 to Heather Brien and Mary Bain from SEU.
In the first round of singles play Raty faced Micaela Silva from UTSA and won 6-4, 6-4. Bedeau made quick work of Nicci Yvanovich from UTSA and took the match 6-2, 6-2. Cantu dominated her match winning 6-1, 6-1 against Kavya Menon from UTSA. Sarah Burton defeated Mariel Maffezzoli from UTSA and handed the Roadrunner a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-5 loss. Salvetova was defeated in her first round singles match by Melissa Hadad from Texas State 6-4, 6-1.
In the second round of singles play, Raty faced another player from UTSA and was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 by Kavya Menon. Cantu played Mariana Perez from Texas State and lost in a close match 6-2, 5-7, 10-5. Burton also played Texas State and lost to Gabriela Rojas 6-2, 6-7(7), 11-9. Bedeau and Salvetova both won their second singles matches, as Bedeau handed Heather Brien from SEU a 6-1, 6-1 loss and Salvetova defeated Katie Ottenbreit from UTSA 0-6, 6-0, 10-5.
"I thought we did really well this weekend. I thought we won the matches we should have won, and the matches that we lost, we lost in third set tie-breakers. I saw some really good things and some things we need to work on. We will hit the practice courts and get ready for the spring," said head coach Chris Taylor.
This tournament concluded the women's tennis fall season play. The Lady Broncs will be back in action in January to begin their spring season schedule.
