The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's track and field program completed the first day of the Houston Invitational held at the Yeoman Field House.
For the Lady Broncs, junior Michelle Elizondo (Laredo, TX/Alexander HS) finished sixth with a toss of 48-7.25 in the weight throw.
"Michelle competed very well today," said head men and women's track and field coach Dennis Darling. "She continues to PR each time, I couldn't ask for nothing more and I hope she continues this throughout the year,"
In the men's weight throw, freshman Oscar Barrera (McAllen, TX/ McAllen HS) finished 11th with a toss of 45-7.25.
"This was Oscar's first meet ever and he has a lot to work on. I saw a lot of good things come from him and I expect more in the weeks to come," added Darling.
Along with the men and women's field events, the men's distance medley relay team competed and finished second behind Texas A&M-Kingsville with a time of 10:16.38.
The team was composed of senior Luis Nava (La Joya, TX/La Joya HS), freshman Roly Vela, sophomore Wally Gonzalez (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg HS) and senior J.J. Hernandez (San Juan, TX/ PSJA HS).
Saturday wraps up the two-day meet for the Broncs. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with running events beginning at 12 noon.
