The University of Texas-Pan American men's distance medley relay team has done it once again. The men competed in Houston at the UH / All Comers Meet this Saturday (Feb. 16) where the men's relay team finished in first place with a time of 10:12.63. They set the school record once again breaking the previous record of 10:15.96 set last weekend at the Bayou Classic.
"The guys went out there and were basically running by themselves. The men beat the field by about 15 seconds," said assistant coach Hugo Cervantes.
The men's distance medley relay team consisted of J.J. Hernandez, Wally Gonzalez, Luis Nava and Gilroy Martinez. The team competed against Lamar, Prairie View, Huston-Tillotson, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word.
"J.J. and Nava really stepped it up this meet. Nava improved his split in the mile by four seconds," added Cervantes.
Senior Vanessa Brown broke her personal best this weekend as well. Brown competed in the 200M dash in the Tyson Invitational held in Fayetteville, AR.
Brown ran a time of 25.08 breaking her previous record of 25.40 that she set at the Bayou Classic on Feb. 9.
"I'm glad Vanessa got the exposure. This was a really big meet for her to run in. I know she will do great in the upcoming outdoor season," said head men and women's track and field coach Dennis Darling.
This was the final meet for both men and women before heading into the USA Indoor Championships and the NCAA Indoor Championships.
March 1 marks the season opener for the outdoor season for the men and women's track and field program. They will be competing in the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
