The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's track and field program had a superb showing at the 26th Annual Victor Lopez/Rice Bayou Classic hosted by Rice University this past weekend in Houston, Texas.
In the women's sprints, Cici Lott placed ninth overall in the 200M dash with a time of 25.73 a personal best for the 2008 outdoor season.
In the 400M dash, junior Vanessa Brown finished sixth with a time of 55.86 and fellow teammate Ashlon Martin finished five spots behind in 11th with a time of 57.56.
In her first time in the season competing in the 5000M run, Carolina Izaguirre finished in fifth place with a time of 17:36.90 and Diana Galloso placed 14th with a time of 18:26.16.
The women's 4x100 and 4x400M relays placed third in both events with the sprint relay finishing with a time of 47.93 breaking their season best of 48.26 and the mile relay finishing with a time of 3:49.96 breaking their season best as well of a 3:50.30.
In the women's field events, Michelle Elizondo went home with a seventh place finish in the shot put with a throw of 40-04.25 and a third place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 159-05. Fellow thrower Stephanie Perez placed eighth in the discus throw with a throw of 134-05. Javelin thrower Brenda Gonzalez finished in ninth with a throw of 89-04.
On the men's side, Ruben Cantu placed ninth in the 200M dash with a time of 22.33. Jameson Strachan false started in the 200M dash but made it up in the 400M dash placing second overall with a time of 48.08 making it his season best.
On the distance side, duo Wally Gonzalez and Gilroy Martinez took two of the top-10 spots in the 800M run with Gonzalez finishing sixth with a time of 1:53.37 and Martinez placing 10th with a time of 1:55.05.
In the 1500M run, La Joya native Luis Nava placed seventh with a time 3:54.39 and fellow teammate J.J. Hernandez finishing right behind in eighth with a time of 3:56.43.
In the field events, Noel Reyna went home with an eighth place finish in the high jump with a jump of 6-02.74 and hammer throw Oscar Barrera placed 10th with a throw of 128-05.
The Broncs will be heading to Austin for the Texas Relays on April 2. The Texas Relays will be a four-day event ending on Saturday, April 5.
