After capturing UTPA's Female Athlete of the Year this past Monday at the department's athletic banquet, senior Amanda Ferris went on to capture titles in the shot put and hammer this past Wednesday, April 29 at the 7th Annual J. Fred Duckett/Rice Twilight Meet hosted by Rice University at the Rice Track Stadium.
With a toss of 46-8 ¾ (14.24M), Amanda Ferris took the title in the shot put and by four inches, defeated Texas A&M's Deidre Tarver in the hammer throw with a toss of 174-5 (53.16M).
Distance's Carolina Izaguirre recorded a second-place finish for the Lady Broncs in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:40.52, a personal best of the season.
Sophomore Diana Galloso clocked in a time of 4:51.96 in the 1,500-meter run for a 10th place finish and a personal best this outdoor season. Houston's Stephanie Aldea took home the first place finish with a time of 17:36.98.
In the women's field events, Melinda Sarmiento placed sixth overall in the high jump with a leap of 5-1 (1.55M) and Cecilia Lott marked a jump of 18-4 ¼ (5.59M) in the long jump for a fifth-place finish. Senior Liliana Cavasos earned a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 37-5 ¾ (11.42M)
In the shot put, Stephanie Perez and Michelle Elizondo placed fourth and sixth-place respectively with tosses of 43-8 (13.31M) and 42-0 ¾ (12.82M). Perez also notched a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 154-5 (47.07M), while Elizondo went on to garner a fourth-place finish in the hammer with a throw of 156-9 (47.78M).
The Lady Broncs next prepare for the Great West Conference Championships held in Houston, Texas and hosted by Houston Baptist on May 15-16.
