The women's track and field program are working their way towards the top as they recorded seven top-10 finishes on day two of the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while the men recorded four top-10 finishes and stand in fourth.
The women's field events proved to be on top of their game as the women took the top three spots in the shot put and a fourth and fifth place finish in the long jump.
Stephanie Perez took the GWC title in the shot put as she placed first amongst the field with a throw of 13.72M, while fellow senior Amanda Ferris took the runner up spot with a throw of 13.63M and Michelle Elizondo a third-place finish with a throw of 13.15M.
In the women's long jump, the Lady Broncs stepped it up a notch as they faced some tight competition clipping at each others heels.
Cecilia Lott earned a fourth-place finish as she recorded a jump of 5.53M, while Liliana Cavazos finished fifth with a jump of 5.52M. South Dakota's Ashlea Johnson finished second with a jump of 5.54M and Utah Valley's Tiera Zaugg took the women's long jump title with a mark of 5.80M.
Cecilia Lott will also be moving on to finals as she place eighth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.99.
Sophomore Sara Hernandez placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles and will be moving onto finals as she clocked a time of 1:05.71.
After placing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the indoor championships, J.J. Hernandez returned for the outdoor championships and placed first as he registered a time of 9:14.96.
In the mens field events, the Broncs took home a seventh and fifth place finish in the shot put and javelin, respectively.
Sophomore Oscar Barrera placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 13.02M, while Joseph Sciaraffa placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 46.22M.
The men and women will wrap up the GWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships today (May 16) at the Rice Track Stadium. Start times have been moved up to 3:00 p.m. due to expected inclement weather.
