The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team (3-9) was taken to the wire at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Tuesday (Sept. 20) by the Texas A&M - International Dustdevils (9-3) en route to a five-set victory (33-31, 18-30, 29-31, 30-20, 22-20).

"It was a very exciting match and I'm sure it was great for our fans. I personally like the boring games that are over in three, but I'll take the win anyway I can get it," said head coach Dave Thorn.

The Lady Broncs were down two games to one and came back to win the last two games. The victory gave the Lady Broncs' a 2-0 record at home for the season.

The Lady Broncs' had a balanced offensive attack with five players having double-digit kills on the match. The team finished with a .050 hitting percentage with 67 kills to 56 errors.

Senior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 14 kills and _ blocks.

"Stephanie made some big plays for us, but I think the whole team, Stephanie included, had some ups and downs throughout the match. When it mattered, she made the big plays," added Thorn.

Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) and junior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) each finished the match with 13 kills and hitting percentages of .172 and .060 respectively.

Freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) and junior Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) both finished with double-digit assists while Blakely had a double-double (assists-digs) with 35-11. Lyons notched 26 assists for the match.

Junior Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) led the Lady Broncs' defense with a match-high 36 digs.

For the match, UTPA held a 67-53 advantage in kills while the teams were even with 81 digs a piece.

Freshman Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) finished with 12 kills while freshman Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) had 10 kills.

For the Dustdevils, Michelle Castaneda finished with a match-high 18 kills while Desiree Arrendodo recorded a match-high 45 assists.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action this weekend (Sept. 23-24) at the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, TX.
