Lady Broncs Drop Four-Set Decision to Ospreys

The UTPA women's volleyball team dropped its third straight match at the IPFW Volleyball Tournament as the Lady Broncs fell to the University of North Florida in their tournament finale on Saturday (Sept. 23).

The Ospreys took control of the first two games of the match as they captured 30-22 and 30-25 decisions before falling to the Lady Broncs in the third frame by a 30-25 count. In the fourth and final set of the match, the Ospreys captured a hard-fought, close decision by a 30-28 score en route to the victory.

Maegan Weisert posted a double-double (kills-digs) for the Ospreys with a 17-kill, 18-dig performance while UNF setter Jenna Thomas notched a double-double (assists-digs) of her own with a match-high 52 assists and 15 digs.

Amy Stroder tied Weisert with a team-high 17 kills en route to helping the Ospreys hold a 58-52 advantage in the kills' category over the Lady Broncs. Tara Taylor finished with a match-high 25 digs for the Ospreys.

UTPA senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) notched her best performance of the IPFW Volleyball Tournament as the Lady Bronc outside hitter collected 15 kills and 16 digs in the match.

Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) also notched a double-double (kills-digs) with a 13-kill, 15-dig performance while Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted the third double-double of the match for the Lady Broncs with 46 assists and 12 digs.

Monique Schaal (Twin Falls, ID/College of Southern Idaho) was the lone Lady Bronc representative on the IPFW Volleyball All-Tournament Team as the UTPA middle blocker finished with 12 kills and a .226 hitting percentage in the match.

Senior Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) finished with a team-high 22 digs against the Ospreys as the Lady Broncs held an 80-77 advantage in that defensive category.

The Lady Broncs dropped their sixth match in their last seven outings and fell to 3-13 on the season while the University of North Florida evened out its record to 8-8 on the season.

UTPA will be back in action on Tuesday (Sept. 26) in Kingsville, TX, in a rematch against Texas A&M-Kingsville with match time set for 7:00 p.m.
