UTPA BroncBusters - Chelsea Blakely

Sept. 11, 2007

1. This is your third season playing volleyball at UTPA, what are your expectations for this season?
CB - "I wanted to break the assists' record and average more assists per game. I want to help rebuild the program and help establish it as a winning program."

2. Your inching closer to breaking the all-time assists' record, how important is this record to you?
CB - "It's very important to me because I think that it helps establish me as a Division I setter, and it was a goal of mine to break this record since I came in as a freshman. Also - I think it's pretty cool to have that record."

3. You've been the setter for the past two years for the Lady Broncs and are considered the quarterback of the team, how much pride do you take in your position?
CB - "I take a lot of pride in it because my teammates depend of me, and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to become a setter. I love having that responsibility on my shoulders."

4. This year's team is extremely young, what have you've done to try to make the transition easier for the newcomers?
CB - "I try to set an example everyday in practicing by working hard, and I try to maintain a positive attitude. I try to be there for my teammates whether they have a question or need advice or just need some encouragement."

5. There are only four home matches on this year's schedule, how has the team dealt with playing on the road?
CB - "It's funny to say, but right now, the road has become our home court. It almost becomes habit because we haven't had the opportunity to play a match on our home court so we just have to adjust and stay mentally focused."

6. When you came into this season, did you feel any added pressure with the loss of so many players?
CB - "I felt a lot of pressure because we lost two great players in Heather Bravo and Karen Lyons, and both of them are found in the record books so they were big losses. They were leaders of the program so I have to step up and fill those shoes."

7. Do you have any pre-match routines that you follow before every game?
CB - "I'm kind of a boring player because I don't have any pre-match rituals."

8. What is the best part of being a UTPA volleyball player?
CB - "I love being on the court everyday and competing at the Division I-level."

9. If we asked your teammates to describe you, what do you think they would say?
CB - "I would hope that they would say that I'm hard working, motivational and expect a lot out of myself as well as my teammates."

10. How was the transition been from head coach Dave Thorn to Angela Hubbard been for you?
CB - "There has been a big difference in the way that the program is run and how we play because she has made us more of a defensive team."
