UTPA newcomer Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) earned her first piece of hardware as the Lady Broncs' middle blocker was selected as the Independent Defensive Player of the Week, which was released on Tuesday (Sept. 25).
Reed becomes the second UTPA volleyball standout in as many weeks to be selected as the Independent Defensive Player of the Week after Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) earned her first accolade last week. The UTPA freshman also became the first UTPA middle blocker to be selected as the Independent Defensive Player of the Week since Danielle Holthe during the 2005 season.
Reed concluded the week by averaging 1.62 blocks per game for the Lady Broncs to go along with a 1.25 kills per game average for the Valley's team that finished 1-1 over the last seven days. The UTPA newcomer recorded a career-high 11 blocks against Sam Houston State, which was the third-highest mark in program history. She concluded that match with 10 block assists to go along with a single block solo against the Bearkats.
In her first season with the Lady Broncs, the UTPA newcomer ranks second on the squad in total blocks (45), block assists (37), block solos (8) and blocks per game (0.67). Reed has also come into her own on the offensive side of the net as the League City, TX, product ranks second on the team in hitting percentage (.226) and fourth in kills (106) and kills per game (1.58).
The weekly NCAA Division I Independent awards are nominated and voted on by Sports Information Directors at all member institutions.
