The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program notched a 1-1 record at the 2007 Loco's Invitational in Birmingham, AL on Saturday (Oct. 13).
Birmingham Southern 3, UTPA 1 (22-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-28)
The Lady Broncs suffered a 3-1 setback over host Birmingham Southern at the Bill Battle Coliseum in the opening match of the Loco's Invitational.
UTPA dominated the first game of the match by a 30-22 decision where Birmingham Southern connected on .080 hitting percentage to go with 13 kills in 50 total attempts and nine errors. The Lady Broncs collected a .292 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 48 total chances with five errors.
The Lady Broncs struggled in the second game of the match with a .163 hitting percentage with 16 kills in 49 chances. Birmingham Southern captured the match with a 30-27 victory en route to tying the score at one apiece.
The third frame had the Panthers posting 17 kills in 51 chances en route to a .216 hitting percentage compared to .131 for the Lady Broncs. UTPA connected on 18 kills in 61 total chances with 10 errors.
The Panthers were able to seal the victory in the fourth frame with a 30-28 triumph in which BSC was able to hold the Lady Broncs to a .071 hitting percentage with nine errors and only 12 kills.
Sarah Harris led the Panther attack with a 20 kills to go along with 14 digs while Milica Stojanovic dished out 57 assists, respectively.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) led the Lady Broncs offensively as the UTPA outside hitter collected a career high double-double 27 kills and 14 digs to go along with two serving aces while Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) recorded a career high 15 kills and four digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) recorded her seventh double-double as she dished out a team-high 59 assists and tied her career high 25 digs. Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) aided the Lady Broncs with eight kills and 15 digs.
UTPA 3, Fisk 0 (30-15, 30-13, 30-23)
After suffering a defeat to Birmingham Southern in the first round of the tournament, the Lady Broncs collected a three game sweep over Fisk University.
The Lady Broncs opened up the first frame with a dominating offensive performance with a 30-15 victory followed by a 30-13 triumph in the second set. The Lady Broncs continued to dominate Fisk University as they posted a 30-23 win in the final match of the game.
Phillips led the attack with 13 kills to go along with a .407 hitting percentage with two errors in 27 total chances to aid the Lady Broncs.
Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S) notched eight kills and seven kills while Edinburg native Cassandra Trevino (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) collected a career high seven kills to go along with six digs.
Phillips and Ytszel Trinidad (Mercedes, TX/Mercedes H.S.) collected All-Tourament team honors after Phillips combined for 40 kills to go along with 94 total attacks and 19 digs while Trinidad posted two kills and 24 digs.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 20) when the Valley's team squares-off against Utah Valley State at 2:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
