The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team notched one of the biggest wins of the season with a five-set victory over UT-Brownsville in front of a home crowd of over 800 fans on Thursday (Nov. 1).
The Lady Broncs came out strong in the first frame as they posted a 30-27 victory in large part to a team hitting percentage of .262 with 18 kills in 42 total attacks. UTPA struggled offensively as both teams put forth one of the best matches with the Lady Broncs escaping with a 34-32 victory to take a 2-0 advantage.
The valley's squad concluded the frame with a .108 hitting percentage with a frame-high 20 kills compared to 17 for the Scorpions.
UT-Brownsville brought their heavy hitting in the third frame as they pulled away with a 30-18 decision. The Scorpions finished with a .333 hitting percentage while connecting on 16 kills in 33 total attacks.
The Scorpions offense continued to affect the Lady Broncs defense as they notched a 30-27 triumph in the fourth frame knotting the score at two apiece and forcing UTPA into a fifth match.
In the fifth and decisive frame, the Lady Broncs were able to pull away with a 15-13 victory. Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) recorded her seventh double-double with 23 kills to go along with 11 digs while Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) collected a career-high 23 kills and 11 digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) quarterbacked the Lady Broncs offense as the UTPA junior notched her ninth double-double with 58 assists to go along with 11 digs. On the defensive end McAllen Memorial product Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched a match-high and career-high 33 digs.
Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) aided the Lady Broncs with six kills and a career-high 19 digs while Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) finished with 10 kills in 33 total attacks.
Talita Milasauskas led the Scorpions with a match-high 28 kills and 20 digs while Claudia Alarcon notched 17 kills, and the Scorpions setter Daianarah Bracero dished out a match-high 61 assists for UT-Brownsville.
The Lady Broncs improved to 11-16 overall while the Scorpions fell to 27-7 on the season.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Nov.6) when UTPA travels to San Marcos, TX for a match-up against Texas State at 7 p.m.
