Two members The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team were selected to the Independent All-Academic team, voted on by Sports Information Directors and head volleyball coaches at NCAA Division I Independent institutions on Wednesday (Nov. 16).
Senior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.), with a 3.483 GPA, and junior Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.), with a 3.468 GPA, join 14 other members of Independent volleyball teams who had at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, had reached at least a sophomore athletic standing and were a starter or key reserve for the team. The team was comprised of sever seniors, seven juniors and two sophomores.
Redd, a nursing major, led the Lady Broncs in block solos with 16 and was third in total blocks, tallying 70 on the season. She also ranked fourth on the Lady Broncs in kills with 238. Redd finished her career at UTPA on multiple all-time top-ten lists, including third in games played (446), third in kills (1,076), third in total attacks (2,926), second in block solos (70), second in block assists (240) and third in total blocks (310).
Lyons is majoring in biology and finished the 2005 season second on the Lady Broncs in assists, with 447. Lyons set the program single-match record for assists on Saturday (Sept. 10) against the University of Texas-Arlingon with 79 assists. During her three year stint at UTPA, Lyons has amassed 1,963 assists.
