Lady Broncs Split at NIT

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program notched a five-set win and dropped a three set decision to Utah Valley State in the opening round of the National Independent Tournament in Orem, UT on Friday (Nov. 16)

UTPA 4, Providence 1 (27-30, 30-28, 30-32, 30-23, 15-12)
In their first match of the afternoon, the Lady Broncs notched a five-set decision (27-30, 30-28, 30-32, 30-23, 15-12 over Providence College at the Shaurian Family Activity Center.

The Friars took the upperhand over the Lady Broncs with a 27-30 victory, but UTPA was able to even the score at 1-1 with a 30-28 triumph in the second frame. In the third frame, the Lady Broncs and Friars were deadlock at 29-29, but Providence College was able to pull away with a 32-30 victory taking a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth set, the Lady Broncs dominated the Friars from the get-go as they recorded a .325 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 40 total attacks with six miscues en route to a 30-23 victory for the match.

Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) collected a match-high 22 kills in 52 total attacks while junior Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) added 16 kills to go along with 17 digs and three serving aces.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out 54 digs to go along with 22 digs collecting her 10th double-double of the season while Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added 20 digs.

Elizabeth Flynn collected 21 kills in 50 total attacks while Sarah Fleming finished with 20 kills and 11 digs. Sara Sheehan dished out a match-high 60 assists in the five-set setback.

Utah Valley State 3, UTPA 0 (30-17, 30-23, 30-22)
The UTPA women's volleyball program failed to pick up its second victory of the day as the Lady Broncs dropped a three-set decision to the host-team Utah Valley State in the second round of competition at the National Independent Tournament.

The Wolverines jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage over the Lady Broncs after recording victories of 30-17, 30-23 in the first two sets then were able to seal the victory with a 30-22 triumph in the third and final frame.

Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) led the Lady Broncs offensively with a match-high 12-kill performance while Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) added 10 kills.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) recorded a team-high 33 assists and Jordan Davila (Houston, TX/Mayde Creek H.S.) aided the Lady Broncs with 13 digs.

Jessica Endres and Camie Manwill led Utah Valley State with 11 kils apiece while Kristi Lindley dished out a match-high 38 assists.

UTPA will be back in action for its final match of the 2007 season against Providence College at the National Independent Tournament with match time set for 3:30 p.m.
