The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program closed out the 2007 season with a victory and a third place finish at the National Independent Tournament on Saturday (Nov.17).
The Lady Broncs finished the 2007 season with a 15-18 overall record under the direction of first year head coach Angela Hubbard improving on their 6-25 record of a year ago.
The Lady Broncs recorded a .260 hitting percentage with 70 kills in 169 total attacks with 26 miscues. In total, the Lady Broncs had four players post 10 or more kills and three players recorded a hitting percentage above .250 in the match.
UTPA struggled in the opening match with a 24-30 loss but fought back taking the second set by a score of 30-25. The Lady Broncs came on strong in the third set taking the frame by a score of 30-24 and followed it by a 30-28 triumph.
Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with a team-high 16 kills to go along with a .290 hitting percentage while Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) collected 15 kills in 28 total attacks.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Franke Dobie H.S.) quarterbacked the Lady Broncs' offense as the UTPA junior setter dished out a match-high 52 assists to go along with 11 digs en route to recording her 12th double-double of the season and earning all-tournament team honors.
Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) and Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) also had a standout offensive performances as they finished with 13 and 12 kills while Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched a match-high 25 kills.
The Lady Broncs claimed third-place honors with the victory over Chicago State at the National Independent Tournament in Orem, UT.
