Fresh off a 2005 campaign in which the UTPA cross country programs produced an All-American, a pair of national qualifiers and a trio of all-region selections, head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach Ricky Vaughn has high hopes for his squads as he released the 2006 cross country schedule on Tuesday (Aug. 15).
"This is a very strong schedule," said Vaughn. "I think that our programs have advanced enough to where he can compete at higher quality meets. This is by-far the best and strongest schedule that we've had here since I've been head coach."
This season, the Broncs and Lady Broncs will be tested throughout the season as they travel to three meets hosted by elite programs from the Big 12 Conference as well as a repeat trip to the Pre-Nationals hosted by Indiana State University.
UTPA will kick-off the 2006 campaign at Baylor University on September 1st for the Baylor Relays followed by a trip two weeks later at another Big 12-opponent at the Texas A&M Invitational set to be held in College Station, TX, on September 16th.
After a pair of Big 12 meets, the Broncs and Lady Broncs will travel less than 200 miles north to San Antonio, TX, for the UTSA Invitational on September 22nd. Following the UTSA Invitational, UTPA will make its third and final stop to the Big 12 as they travel to Oklahoma State University's Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, OK, on September 30th.
The Broncs and Lady Broncs will take two weeks off of meet competition before heading to Terre Haute, IN, for the Brooks Pre-National Meet on October 14th followed a second trip to the State of Indiana for the Independent National Cross Country Championships hosted by IPFW on October 30th.
UTPA will once again travel to Baylor University for the NCAA Division I South Central Regional Cross Country Championships on November 11th followed by the NCAA Division I National Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, IN, on November 20th to conclude the 2006 campaign.
