UTPA BroncBusters - Lizet Garcia

Sept. 22, 2005

1. What are your goals for this season both individually and as a team.
LG - "The goals for myself this season is to be a good teammate and a support group for team. As a team, our goals are to beat all of the odds. We want to score well in all of our meets, especially in regionals."

2. How did you become a cross country runner?
LG - "I have always loved to run. When I was in middle school, the basketball coach encouraged me to try cross country because I could run faster than everyone else. I took his advice, and I love running cross country."

3. What are your thoughts before, during and after each race?
LG - "I am very eager before a race, and I like to think about my performance on the course. During the race, I try to not to think negatively and try to continue to push myself. After the race, I always evaluate how I ran and what I could do better in the next meet."

4. When Brian Cunningham became the cross country coach, he was the third coach that you've had in your three years at UTPA. Does having this many coaches help or hinder you as an athlete?
LG - "I don't think that it has really hindered me. I try to adjust to the situation and try to make the best of it. I believe that each coach has given me something different that can help me reach my goals."

5. In your eyes, is cross country more mental or physical?
LG - "I think that it's definitely more mental because the more you run, the more the mental side of the sport comes out. You have factors like the length of the race, how hard to run, the people surrounding you and building a strategy all in your mind at the same time so there's a lot of mental preparation that goes into it."

6. Who has been a major impact on your life?
LG - "Dr. Gonzales, a professor at UTPA, has really taught me to go outside of the limits and run for myself."

7. What's the one thing about cross country that the normal, everyday person wouldn't understand?
LG - "I think that it's how much we actually run and the miles that we put in every week. When I tell people that we went on a 10-mile run, they get all freaked out and can't believe that we run that far. I love running so those long runs are always fun for me."

8. In your eyes, how much of cross country is a team sport and how much of it is individual?
LG - "I really believe that it's a little of both because everybody's individual performance counts for the team, and we all push each other. Personally, I think that cross country pushes you to be better that you thought you could be."

9. What do you think is your role on this year's team?
LG - "I think that my role is to be supportive. I try to help push my teammates and build their confidence."

10. How difficult is it to prepare for three consecutive seasons (cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field) in one year?
LG - "I look at it as one long process, and it hasn't affected me because all the distances that I run are either long or middle distances. I love to run so I really haven't thought too much about going from one season to another."
